The company started the event, focusing on iPhone’s upcoming operating system iOS 14. As part of its presentation, Apple introduced a new feature called Application Library, which automatically organizes applications on your home screen and doesn’t need to navigate through several pages.
Apple also announced a smoother way to discover and access new apps. The so-called App Clips feature a small portion for use whenever needed, whether it’s a scooter on demand in a restaurant or ordering food. These apps are small in size and integrated with Apple Pay. Users can then decide to download the full version of the application from the App Store.
The multi-day developer event is closely watched by consumers and developers for tips on what to expect from iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watch. This year, for the first time, the event was completely virtual due to the pandemic.
The event is an empty auditorium, a gym, a car park and a laboratory in an “undisclosed place”.
Say hello to iOS 14
Several technology companies have the power to change the way we communicate as Apple. This year, however, Apple showed how impressed it is with leading business messaging services.
Apple has also taken steps to relieve some potential headaches for users. Incoming calls will no longer take over your screen on iOS devices, including iPad and iPhone. Instead they appear as a banner at the top of the screen.
Picture in Picture allows users to continue watching videos while switching to other apps like iMessage. Users can also move or hide the video around the screen, but still listen to the sound.
Apple moves away from Intel chips on Macs
The new chips, called “Apple Silicon”, will give Apple more control over updates and user experience, and allow apps to run more smoothly between iPhone, iPad and Macs. The local applications of the company are already working with the new platform, as well as large programs such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop.
Apple has announced several tools to allow third-party app developers to reject bids from the Intel-based chip system the Mac series is currently using. The company also said it will support and release new versions of macOS with Intel chips for “next years”.
CEO Tim Cook expects Monday that Apple plans to start his first computer with new chips by the end of this year, and expects the entire transition to be completed within two years.
AirPods updates
Apple has announced that AirPods will switch between devices and audio more smoothly. For example, users can finish a podcast and then get their iPad to watch movies. When a phone call comes in, the voice automatically switches to call. The Pro version will now have a new feature called “spatial sound” that aims to repeat a surround sound or movie theater experience.
Common products
The current health crisis not only shaped how the incident happened, it also affected some Apple products.
With WatchOS 7, Apple Watch offers hand washing coaching functionality. With the sound of water and the way your hands move, you will feel like you are near a sink and count down to you. If you pause early, it asks you to continue washing.
At the same time, Apple offers users a new way to convey the reality of this moment to friends and family. Apple users can now add a face mask to their Memoji.
Privacy “nutrition labels”
In recent years, Apple has tried to establish itself from some of its technology colleagues by stating its commitment to digital privacy. This year’s WWDC was no different.
Apple has announced that users can choose to share their approximate location with apps only. In the App Store, users can see the highlights of their privacy information before downloading an app.
The apps also have privacy “nutrition labels” that show how much or how little data they collect, such as financial information, browsing history, or contacts. Each developer will report privacy practices on their own.
