Winners against Porto, Chelsea take a choice on qualification

If FC Porto gets the most chances, Chelsea, Kushal, won 0–2 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday 7 April. Mason Mount opened the scoring, and Ben Chilwell widened the trench. The Blues are a serious choice if they qualify.

The defeat may seem cruel to FC Porto. The Portuguese could hope to get better from their clash against Chelsea, which they especially risked on multiple occasions with 12 shots. It was Sergio Conceicao’s men, who brought out the best in the match, pressuring Edward Mendy’s cage, as struck by Ottavio in the 23rd minute, directly at the corner, on the crossbar. The Dragos’ lack of efficiency benefitted Chelsea, and it was eventually the Blues who opened the scoring on their first opportunity in the 32nd minute, against the run of the game. Maison Mount eliminated JDU with an invincible ball catch, before betraying Marchesin with a cross strike. The first goal for the Englishman in the Champions League this season.

In the second half, Porto pushed for par, especially through Marega, who stumbled over Mendy in the 51st minute. Malian could also get the benefit of the penalty by Azpilicueta being pushed in the back at the entrance to the area. Ten minutes before the end of the match, Sergio Conceicao tried to do everything for the whole with three changes. But when his team was restructuring, Ben Chilwell recovered the ball for the Blues, ran for a goal, then dribbled Marchesin before adding to the score (0-2).

Although sanitary measures in Portugal and the United Kingdom lead to this double-clash home and away matches at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez Pizzu Stadium, these two away goals are a valuable advantage for Chelsea in their goal of qualifying for the semi-finals. Second round Tuesday, April 13, at 9 pm.
