In a shocking turn of events, several Sony first-party studios have been hit with a wave of layoffs. The affected studios include big names such as Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, and Insomniac, as well as UK studio Firesprite Games.
One of the casualties of the layoffs at Firesprite Games is the cancellation of a new Twisted Metal title that was reportedly in the works. The game was said to be a live-service title in the early stages of development before being scrapped.
According to PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, the layoffs at Firesprite and other Sony studios were due to overgrowth within the companies. Sony had acquired Firesprite in 2021, and the studio had recently worked on co-developing Horizon Call of the Mountain with Guerilla Games.
Sadly, the closure of London Studio, creators of Blood & Truth, has been confirmed. This news has left many in the gaming community saddened by the loss of such a talented team.
As the dust settles, the fate of upcoming projects at Sony’s first-party studios is now under scrutiny. Reports suggest that some projects, including the canceled Twisted Metal game, have been halted in light of the recent events.
The Twisted Metal series, a longtime flagship for PlayStation, has been on hold since its last reboot in 2012 for the PS3. However, fans can still look forward to a live-action adaptation of the series on Peacock, which has been renewed for a second season.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it is always disheartening to see talented teams face such setbacks. We can only hope that those affected will find new opportunities to showcase their skills and creativity in the future.
