Former Florida Atlantic head coach Dusty May has agreed to a lucrative five-year contract with the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team, earning an average of $3.75 million per year. May had multiple offers on the table but ultimately chose Michigan over Louisville, Vanderbilt, and other programs.
This decision comes after Michigan fired former head coach Juwan Howard following a disappointing 8-24 season. Howard, who had led the team to an 87-72 record and two NCAA tournament appearances in his five years at the helm, was let go in a surprising move by the university.
May, who had a successful tenure at Florida Atlantic with two NCAA tournament berths in the last two seasons, brings a strong track record of success to his new role. Under May’s leadership, FAU had the fifth-best winning percentage in Division I basketball.
After FAU’s first-round loss in this year’s tournament, May was unsure about his future with the program. However, with the opportunity to coach at a historic program like Michigan, May jumped at the chance to lead the Wolverines to future success.
In addition to the coaching change, several Michigan players have entered the transfer portal following Howard’s firing. It will be up to May to rebuild the team and create a competitive roster for the upcoming season as he looks to continue Michigan’s tradition of basketball excellence. Insider Wales Sport will continue to provide updates on May’s progress with the Wolverines as the season approaches.
