UK: Criticism of the largest student union supporting ‘Israeli apartheid’ week

The UK’s National Union of Students (NUS) has come under fire for encouraging a ‘division not dialogue’ by supporting the annual ‘Israeli Apartheid’ week that begins on 21 March.

NUS, which has supported such activities in the past, said it would stand “in solidarity” with pro-Palestinian activists, who are planning a series of week-long events on university campuses this year , during which they called Israel a “state of apartheid”, reported Jewish Chronicle Thursday.

The Week Against “Israeli Apartheid”, which began at the University of Toronto in 2005, is now held in 55 countries. During this week of events, Jewish students are notorious targets of persecution, intimidation and intimidation and anti-Israel protests, rallies and lectures are held on campuses.

Nina Friedman, president of the Jewish Students’ Union, said that the NUS “put itself in a position of division, not dialogue” with its decision to support the events.

“Israel Apartheid Week is a divisive and confrontational tool used to harm and polarize communities rather than build consensus and cooperation around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said.

“We see year after year that this creates a hostile environment on campus and online for Jewish students,” she said.

Jonathan Hunter, chairman of the Pinsker Center, a UK-based think tank that supports free speech on university campuses, said the NUS has an obligation to “represent the rights of all students to the best of our ability. Their abilities” and “this is disappointing”. that they affirm radical activists who routinely perpetuate anti-Semitic tropes”.

A spokesman for the NUS defended the union’s decision to support anti-Israel activities, saying the annual series of events was “a strategy chosen by the Palestinian people to peacefully counter their own oppression.”
