New PlayStation Access Controller Designed for Disabled Gamers
Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation Access controller, specifically designed for disabled players, is set to launch on December 6. Developed over a period of five years, the controller is the result of extensive research, prototyping, and collaboration with experts and disabled gamers.
The PlayStation Access controller boasts an intuitive setup process and offers users a high level of customization. Its circular design features eight radial buttons, a large center button, and an analog stick, all strategically positioned for ease of use. Additionally, its modular design allows for further customization to suit individual needs.
One notable feature of the controller is its magnetic caps, which can be easily swapped for differently shaped caps. This feature enhances accessibility and ensures that players can adapt the controller to their specific requirements. Moreover, the controller includes 3.5mm ports that enable users to connect external input devices.
To complement the Access controller, the PlayStation 5’s operating system provides built-in software support. Players have the ability to fully customize button bindings through the options menu. The controller even includes a button-press toggle mode, making it even more user-friendly.
For those requiring additional buttons, the Access controller can be paired with the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit. This further expands the controller’s versatility, ensuring a seamless gaming experience.
Throughout the development process, Sony consulted disabled gamers, including organizations like Able Gamers, to create a product that meets the needs of the community. The aim was to design a controller that would have a broad impact on as many players as possible.
Crucially, Sony focused on creating a controller that not only offered accessibility but also maintained a sense of inclusivity. The goal was to ensure that the gaming experience for disabled players felt equal, without it being a medical or impersonal solution.
The PlayStation Access controller will be available for purchase at a price of $90 USD. However, it is important to note that it is only compatible with the PlayStation 5 console. As the first of its kind from Sony, this controller marks a significant step towards providing a more inclusive gaming environment for all players.
