The future IJmuiden Ver wind farm, which will be built about 80 kilometers off the coast in the North Sea, should also be connected to the British electricity grid. This is the result of a cooperation agreement between Dutch network operator Tenet and the British National Grid. At the same time, large English wind farms in the North Sea should be connected to the Dutch electricity network.
The Netherlands already has an electric connection with Great Britain, with which the Netherlands exports electricity exclusively from Masvalte 2 in Rotterdam. To make electricity generation more sustainable, power exchange between North Sea countries is becoming increasingly important. Because wind and sun cannot be controlled by humans, there will be shortage at one time and surplus at other times.
Janet Dzekmans of Tenet is responsible for the cooperation and believes that the energy systems of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands can complement each other. For example, Great Britain has a lot more nuclear power than the Netherlands. Whether the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining will be a welcome addition to the Dutch system in the future. It mainly relies on wind and sun, with support from traditional gas-fired power stations at the moment.
