Pope Francis Leads Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square
Pope Francis presided over a joyous Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, with tens of thousands of faithful in attendance to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord, marking the most holy day of the Christian calendar.
The Vatican Square was adorned with vibrant flowers from the Netherlands, a tradition dating back to 1985. During the Easter Vigil Mass, Pope Francis reflected on the surprise and amazement of the women who visited Jesus’ tomb, sharing the Resurrection story with the congregation.
Following the Mass, the Pope delivered the traditional noon-day Urbi et Orbi from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, offering his Apostolic blessing to Rome and the world. He then joyfully waved to pilgrims from his popemobile as he circled among the crowd in St. Peter’s Square.
The Easter liturgical season will continue through the Solemnity of Pentecost in May, as believers around the world reflect on the significance of Christ’s resurrection and the hope it brings.
