SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, has once again expanded its internet megaconstellation. On its latest mission, the company successfully launched 23 additional Starlink satellites into space. Lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, the satellites were aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.
The launch, which took place on July 8, saw the Falcon 9’s first stage make a smooth vertical landing on the droneship. This was an impressive achievement, as it marked the 17th successful landing for this particular booster.
Approximately 65.5 minutes after liftoff, the 23 Starlink satellites were scheduled to deploy into low Earth orbit. With this latest addition, the Starlink network now boasts over 5,000 operational spacecraft, providing internet connectivity to previously underserved parts of the globe.
SpaceX aims to establish a global broadband network by deploying tens of thousands of Starlink satellites. Currently, the company has permission to launch 12,000 of these satellites, and they have applied for approval to launch an additional 30,000.
