Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) can win the Australian Open for the ninth time in his career on Sunday. The Serbs then have to deal with Daniel Medvedev (ATP 4). The Russian defeated Stephanos Tsitsipas (ATP 6) 6-6,6-2 and 7-5 in three sets in their semi-finals. In the quarter-finals, the Greeks did a stunt of considerable size against Rafael Nadal, holding a 0-2 deficit.
Medvedev, 25, has yet to win a Grand Slam title. His best result so far was the fourth round (eighth final) in Melbourne. At the US Open, the Russians had already played a final in 2019, but lost against Nadal. The 22-year-old Tsitsipas has yet to win a Grand Slam title. In 2019, he reached the semi-finals in Melbourne, but ran in Nadal. The young Greeks avenged this version by playing Spaniard Home in the quarter-finals.
Defending champions Djokovic won the semi-final on Thursday in three sets over Russia’s tournament Askal Kartsev (ATP 114). After an hour and 53 minutes, they won 6–3, 6–4 and 6–2. The 33-year-old Djokovic has previously won the Australian Open eight times (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020). He can win his eighteenth Grand Slam on Sunday. With that, he would come in two pieces from record holders Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
