Research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Preventive Cardiology Conference has found that simply climbing stairs on a regular basis is associated with a longer life. Study author Dr. Sophie Paddock recommends taking the stairs for heart health benefits, as less than half of American adults are currently meeting physical activity guidelines.

The European study revealed that stair climbing can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Specifically, climbing stairs was associated with a 24% reduced risk of dying and a 39% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Additionally, stair climbing has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, including stroke, heart failure, and heart attack.

The American Council on Exercise refers to stair climbing as “vertical training,” as it targets the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The benefits of stair climbing also include a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and improved cardiorespiratory fitness, memory, and mood.

Experts recommend starting small with climbing stairs for beginners and gradually increasing intensity for maximum health gains. By incorporating regular stair climbing into daily routines, individuals can see significant improvements in their overall health.
