New Study Reveals AI-Powered Chatbots Can Improve Physical Activity, Diet, and Sleep
New research published in npj Digital Medicine has unveiled the significant impact AI-powered chatbots can have on improving physical activity, diet, and sleep. These findings are particularly important in combating health problems such as depression, anxiety, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, cancers, and increased mortality rates, which are often caused by poor diet, lack of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and inadequate sleep.
The study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 trials, involving 3,567 participants, to examine the effects of chatbots on physical activity, diet, and sleep. The results demonstrated that chatbot interventions had small-to-moderate effect size improvements in these areas.
AI-driven chatbots have evolved from basic applications to personalized tools that can positively influence users’ daily lives. Users who engaged with chatbots saw significant improvements, including an increase of 735 steps per day, an extra serving of fruits and vegetables in their diet, and an additional 45 minutes of sleep each night.
Interestingly, text-based chatbots were found to be more effective than voice-based alternatives. While the potential of chatbots in healthcare is promising, it is essential to exercise caution to ensure the advice given is appropriate. Therefore, the best approach for now seems to be a combination of human coaching supplemented with chatbots.
It is important for future research to focus on larger sample sizes, longer-term follow-up studies, and a deeper exploration of the nuances of chatbot interactions. Researchers and developers should continue to refine and personalize chatbot interventions to maximize their effectiveness in promoting healthy behaviors.
These findings highlight the promising role of AI-powered chatbots in improving physical activity, diet, and sleep, ultimately contributing to better overall health outcomes. As technology continues to advance, chatbots have the potential to play a significant part in helping individuals make healthier choices in their everyday lives.
