Apple has reversed its decision to shut down Epic Games’ developer account in the European Union, allowing the account to be reinstated. This comes after Apple previously terminated Epic Games’ Sweden developer account, preventing the development of an alternative app marketplace for iPhone users in the EU.
The tech giant cited previously breached contractual obligations and a court decision in the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple as reasons for the termination. However, Apple engaged in a conversation with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney before reinstating the account.
The public backlash following the termination was significant, with many questioning Apple’s motives. Emails from Apple made it appear as though the account was shut down due to Sweeney’s criticism. The European Union also requested an explanation from Apple regarding the account termination, which likely played a role in the decision reversal.
Following Apple’s response to the European Commission, Epic Games announced plans to launch an alternative app store for iOS in Europe. This will bring popular games like Fortnite to iPhone users through the Epic Games store.
Despite the account being reinstated, Epic Games remains critical of Apple’s compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company plans to continue arguing against Apple in court and with regulators as they push for a fairer marketplace for developers and users alike.
