Poultry farmers in the United States are urging the government to ease travel bans to allow hundreds of EU experts to fill job opportunities, warning that if the bans are not lifted, there could be a shortage of birds or higher prices.

The British Poultry Council (BPC) says an emergency exemption from covid-related quarantine is needed to avoid a shortage of highly skilled turkey plakers and butchers to reduce supply this year. About 9m British turkeys are reared for Christmas every year but the seasonal sector cannot survive without UK labor, it warns.

“The seasonal turkey sector is critical to the Great British Christmas supply and it cannot survive without access to labor outside the UK,” said Richard Griffiths, BPC’s chief executive. “If these gaps cannot be filled, it will affect the risk of food production, and therefore cost – all of which are cost-effective.”

“The government must ensure that British poultry and the quality it represents are affordable and available to all. British food producers would be punished if they lost control of the nation when it came to our own food security. Should be taken in hand. ”

BPC is an association of poultry producers in the United Kingdom – chicken, turkey, poultry and goose. Its members produce about 90%, and raise about 1bn birds per year.

Turkish farmers rely heavily on seasonal assistance to assist in the intensive slaughter: raising, weighing, hanging, and eviction.

With the lockdown forcing small festival gatherings, farmers are having difficulty predicting consumer demand and there are further fears that larger birds will not go in their favor.

Puppies – or poultices – are usually ordered as fully grown birds the following year at the Christmas dinner table in February. According to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DIFRA), between January and June 2020, ms.2 million poultry was reared on farms, compared to .1.1 m in the same period in 2012.

Intensive meat processing plants have already been affected by the outbreak of Kovid-19. One thousand workers were tested for the convenience of Bernard Matthews of Halfone, Suffolk, while 722 colleagues tested positive for Covid-19.
