To make it feel like the seventh time this year, a high-profile video game developer has called for respect as the critique goes a long way. Marvel’s Spider-Man creative director Brian Intihar has called for more kindness to the community after receiving threatening messages about Peter Parker’s face model remake in the upcoming PlayStation 5 remaster.

This isn’t the first time a major PlayStation has faced exclusive criticism, as our latest: The second installment was at the center of a storm earlier this year, with Naughty Dog vice president Neil Drakman backtracking. So bad that the abuse happened that the California developer was forced to release a statement.

This is an even more unfortunate reminder of how a toxic online discourse in 2020 attracts an unparalleled degree of trend with a relatively small creative decision. Constructive criticism is a good thing, and we all have the right to express our opinions – but personal insults, attacks and threats are Never All right!
