The super-bright Comet NEOWISE will be at its most visible over the UK tonight (July 23).
It’s one of the brightest comets to pass over the Earth in recent history, making it easy to spot without a telescope or binoculars.
Tonight, the comet will be at its ‘closest to Earth’ – but there’s no need to worry it’s still pretty far away. With a distance of 64 million miles between us and it.
Best of all, the comet will be visible all evening, so there’s a strong chance you’ll be able to see it.
So if you’re hoping to get a glimpse of the dazzling display here’s what you need to look for, and where.
How to see comet NEOWISE from the UK tonight
To find the comet – which will be at its peak brightness this evening – you need to look east.
The comet will appear underneath the Plough constellation, and just above the horizon.
Space.com advises that stargazers hold the bottom of their clenched fist on the horizon and the comet will appear above it.
The comet passes closest to the Earth on Thursday (July 23) where it will be below and slightly to the right of the Plough.
Where is the Plough in the sky and what does it look like?
Sometimes known as ‘the Big Dipper’ The Plough is part of a larger constellation called the Ursa major.
It’s easy to spot in the sky because it looks somewhat like a big saucepan with a handle.
The comet will be closest to the Earth tonight (July 23) where it will be below and slightly to the right of the Plough.
By Saturday (July 25) the comet will have moved so that it is directly underneath the Plough, as it moves further westwards and slightly higher on our horizon every night.
