A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has debunked claims made by anti-vaccination groups that mRNA Covid vaccines are linked to fatal heart problems in teens and young adults. The study found no evidence to support such claims, reassuring the public about the safety of the vaccines.
This news comes amidst misinformation circulating regarding the vaccines and their impact on heart health, particularly among young athletes. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was cited as an example of an athlete allegedly experiencing heart problems after receiving the vaccine, fueling concerns among the sports community.
However, a recent analysis of nearly 1,300 death certificates in Oregon revealed that out of 40 deaths among individuals who had been vaccinated with an mRNA Covid vaccine, only three occurred within 100 days of vaccination. Two of the deaths were attributed to pre-existing health conditions, while the cause of the third death was listed as an “undetermined natural cause.”
Despite the uncertainty surrounding one of the deaths, experts like Dr. Leslie Cooper from the Mayo Clinic emphasize that there is no evidence of an increased risk of cardiac deaths associated with Covid mRNA vaccines. Dr. Cooper also highlighted that the risk of myocarditis from the vaccines is much lower compared to the risk from a Covid infection.
Dr. Ofer Levy, director of the Precision Vaccines Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, further supported the findings, stating that the study adds to the growing body of evidence that mRNA Covid vaccines are safe and do not pose a significant risk of sudden death. This information serves as a reassurance to the public, especially to those who may be hesitant about getting vaccinated.
