Former Red Sox general manager and executive vice president, Theo Epstein, is set to join Fenway Sports Group (FSG) as a senior advisor. FSG, which owns the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Liverpool Football Club, has enlisted Epstein’s services to consult on various matters.
Epstein’s primary task will be to assist in Liverpool’s search for a new manager to replace Jurgen Klopp. Additionally, he will provide advice to FSG owners on company operations, strategic growth, investment initiatives, and big-picture endeavors.
Epstein’s close ties with FSG’s Mike Gordon played a pivotal role in his appointment. He will also act as a consultant for Penguins GM Kyle Dubas and new Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, thanks to his previous collaboration with them during his time with the Chicago Cubs, where he secured a World Series championship in 2016.
Epstein had been serving in an advisory capacity for Major League Baseball before FSG approached him a few months ago. His vast knowledge and experience in leading successful sports teams are expected to be invaluable as FSG looks to fill critical vacancies at Liverpool, such as the manager and sporting director positions, while also resolving contract issues with key players.
Meanwhile, in Boston, the Red Sox have experienced a string of disappointing seasons. The team’s ownership has announced a likely reduction in payroll by 2024. Epstein, who played a significant role in the Red Sox’s successful era, winning two World Series championships, will now contribute to FSG’s ownership group and advisory roles, completing a transformative era for the company.
