Introducing Tiangong Space Station: China unveils stunning first photos – Insider Wales Sport

China’s Shenzhou 16 mission has provided the world with remarkable images of the Tiangong Space Station as the crew headed back to Earth. Captured by a high-definition camera, these images mark the first time the entire structure of the Tiangong space station has been fully imaged since it entered orbit.

After completing their mission, the Shenzhou 16 crew handed over control of the space station to the Shenzhou 17 crew, who arrived at Tiangong on October 26. The returning crew, consisting of commander Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu, and Gui Haichao, departed from Tiangong on October 30 in the Shenzhou 16 return capsule. They successfully made their way back to Earth from low-Earth orbit on the same day.

During their return journey, the crew managed to capture breathtaking views of the laboratory in orbit above Earth. The Tiangong space station is composed of three units, with the first unit, Tianhe, arriving in low-Earth orbit in 2021. The subsequent launches of the second and third units, Wentian and Mengtian, took place in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The completed Tiangong space station measures 180 feet in length and weighs 77 tons, making it approximately 20% the size of the International Space Station.

As part of their mission, the crew of Tiangong 16 carried out various activities, including a spacewalk, growing vegetables, and conducting a live lecture from space. The aim of these activities was to conduct important scientific experiments and maintain a rotating crew of three taikonauts for at least a decade.

Looking ahead, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) plans to expand the Tiangong space station with three additional modules, bringing the total count to six. Additionally, the CMSA intends to launch a Hubble-class space telescope called “Xuntian” to orbit Earth alongside the space station. This will serve as a platform for repairs, refueling, and upgrades, further enhancing China’s presence in space exploration.
