New Hampshire, USA – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has reported sporadic flu cases across the state. While health authorities focus on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they caution residents about the importance of remaining vigilant against the dual threat of seasonal influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Dr. Erik Shessler, the associate medical director for Dartmouth Health Children’s in Manchester, emphasized the significance of COVID-19, flu, and RSV as the major viruses of concern in the region. However, he highlighted that there are additional respiratory viruses that go untested by the state’s health department.
Recognizing the heightened demand for medical services during this time of the year, doctor’s offices are making adjustments to ensure increased access for patients. They are extending their hours of operation to evenings and weekends to accommodate same-day appointments.
While RSV cases have seen a recent surge, they have not yet reached the peak levels observed during the previous winter season. Dr. Shessler advises residents to adopt common-sense practices in order to stay healthy. This includes consuming a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables, ensuring sufficient sleep, engaging in regular exercise, practicing good hygiene such as handwashing, wearing masks, prioritizing mental health, and receiving vaccinations.
As flu-related casualties are reported for this season, two adults from Belknap and Hillsborough counties have unfortunately succumbed to the virus. Thankfully, there have been no reported pediatric flu deaths within the state thus far.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages residents to remain proactive in protecting their health and well-being. By adhering to preventive measures and seeking prompt medical assistance, individuals can contribute to limiting the spread of these viral illnesses in the region.
