OnePlus Joins Foldable Smartphone Market with Release of OnePlus Open
Chinese smartphone company OnePlus has entered the foldable phone market with the release of its first foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. This move puts OnePlus in competition with other major manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi.
The OnePlus Open features a unique form factor, unfolding like a book to reveal a 6.31-inch cover screen and a 7.82-inch OLED display when fully opened. It is slightly smaller than the iPad mini but offers a thin and lightweight design, with a barely noticeable crease when folded. The device measures 11.7mm thick when folded and 5.8mm when unfolded. In comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a thickness of 8.25mm.
Weighing in at 239 grams, the OnePlus Open is 18 grams heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It boasts a “Ceramic Guard” cover glass, similar to Apple’s Ceramic Shield technology, which provides durability and protection for the device.
OnePlus has partnered with camera company Hasselblad for the OnePlus Open’s camera system. It is equipped with a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 6x in-sensor lossless zoom, and a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. When unfolded, the device also features a 20-megapixel front-facing selfie camera, while a 32-megapixel selfie camera is available when closed. The lens housing of the OnePlus Open resembles a luxury watch face, but its relatively large size makes it challenging to avoid fingers obstructing the lenses during photography.
Other notable features of the OnePlus Open include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, 16GB RAM, a fingerprint sensor power button, a 4,805mAh battery, and support for Wi-Fi 7.
Pre-orders for the OnePlus Open are currently available, and the device is set to launch on October 26. The starting price for this foldable smartphone is set at $1,700.
With its entry into the foldable phone market, OnePlus aims to make its mark alongside established competitors. The OnePlus Open offers a sleek design, impressive camera capabilities, and high-performance features that are sure to attract tech enthusiasts looking for the latest in smartphone technology.
