Frugals, a popular fast-food restaurant chain, voluntarily stopped using the machines on August 8. As a precautionary measure, the WSDH is advising individuals who consumed milkshakes between May 29 and August 7, 2023, to contact their healthcare providers, especially if they fall into the high-risk categories of being pregnant, aged 65 and older, or having a weakened immune system.
Frugals is fully cooperating with health officials and has undertaken thorough cleaning, sanitization, and retesting of the milkshake machines. According to health officials, Listeria can be treated with antibiotics, underlining the importance of prompt medical attention for affected individuals. However, the bacteria can cause severe illness when it spreads beyond the gut, with pregnant individuals, older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and newborns being particularly at risk.
Symptoms of listeriosis include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, seizures, muscle aches, and fatigue. It is essential for anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially if they have recently consumed Frugals milkshakes, to seek medical attention promptly.
Genetic fingerprinting analysis has indicated that the same strain of Listeria was responsible for previous hospitalizations in Washington state between February 27 and July 22. This implies that the restaurant’s lax food safety practices may have caused multiple instances of listeriosis.
