In a bid to combat the spread of the West Nile Virus (WNV), Cumberland County in Pennsylvania will be undertaking mosquito spraying in five different municipalities. Taking place on Thursday, August 17 from dusk until around 11 p.m., the spraying will target areas in Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, North Middleton, Monroe, and Silver Spring Townships.
The decision to conduct the spraying comes as a result of the discovery of additional WNV positive mosquito samples in the region. Several municipalities have already reported positive WNV samples, including Camp Hill, Carlisle, Lemoyne, Mechanicsburg, New Cumberland, Shiremanstown, East Pennsboro, Hampden, North Middleton, Monroe, Shippensburg, Silver Spring Township, and Upper Allen Township.

In an effort to minimize the spread of the virus, the county has provided the public with preventive measures that can be taken. These include wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside, using insect repellent, and removing any stagnant water around homes where mosquitoes may breed.
The WNV is a potentially serious illness, with symptoms ranging from fever, headache, and body aches to more severe conditions such as encephalitis and meningitis. It is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, making prevention and control measures crucial to safeguarding the community’s health.
Cumberland County officials are urging residents to follow the recommended preventive measures and to stay updated with any further announcements from the municipality. By working together and taking necessary precautions, the hope is to minimize the impact and spread of the West Nile Virus in the affected areas.
