Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman will travel to Turkey, Spain, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt from March 4-11.
Deputy Secretary Sherman will begin a visit to Turkey’s Istanbul and Ankara on March 4-5, meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal and other officials to discuss Putin’s premeditated, unprovoked and unwarranted invasion of Ukraine. Parliamentarian meetings will include discussions on continued joint US-Turkish cooperation and our shared interest in supporting Ukraine.
Deputy Secretary Sherman will then travel to Madrid, Spain, March 6-8 to co-open the US-Spanish cyber security dialogue on March 7 with Spanish Foreign and Global Affairs Secretary of State, Angels Moreno Bau. The Under Secretary and the Secretary of State will meet bilaterally to discuss a range of issues and challenges, including Russia’s attack on Ukraine, our coordinated response and a strong transatlantic partnership. The Deputy Secretary will also meet students and professors from a Madrid-based university and participate in discussions with women entrepreneurs.
The Deputy Secretary will then travel to Rabat and Casablanca, Morocco, on March 8-9, where she will lead the US delegation to the US-Moroccan Strategic Dialogue on regional policy issues. She will have a working lunch with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and meet other senior government officials. She will also deliver a keynote address and meet young Moroccans at an International Women’s Day event featuring entrepreneurs and business women.
Thereafter, Assistant Secretary Sherman will travel to Algiers, Algeria on March 9-10. She will call on President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to discuss bilateral and regional issues. On March 10, Deputy Secretary of State will meet with Secretary of State Ramtane Lamamra and lead the US delegation for the fifth US-Algeria Strategic Dialogue. The Assistant Secretary will also meet with high school and college students and local US business representatives participating in the US-sponsored STEM program.
Finally, from March 10-11, Assistant Secretary Sherman will travel to Cairo, Egypt, where she will meet Foreign Minister Sameh Shouki and other senior Egyptian officials. The MPs will also meet the head of the National Human Rights Council, Moushira Khattab, hold discussions with Egyptian human rights defenders and meet Egyptian young people.
