Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday traveled by boat to the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, where a military operation is being conducted by the Ukrainian military.

In a message posted to his Instagram account, the Ukrainian leader said he was “going to the area where the operation is taking place” to monitor movements, amid escalating tensions with Russia.

He also posted a photo in which he is seen in front of a map with Alexei Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. “We are familiarizing ourselves with the command of combat patrol and the state’s border security system,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, Zelensky said that “not all countries” in NATO want Ukraine to join the coalition, according to the union news agency.

In this regard, he also ruled out the possibility of submitting NATO membership to the referendum. “NATO issue is one of them through which pressure is exerted on Ukraine. The main issue is Ukraine’s independence and its free choice on any issue, and Ukraine has been fighting for its right to do so for many years,” he Said Emphatically.

He thus underlined that Ukraine chose to join NATO “for its own safety” and recalled that it “has been moving in this direction for a long time”.

Zelensky said Russia is using the issue “as an excuse” to ramp up its military deployment to Ukraine’s borders, which “some European countries are playing with.” “But there is no need to divert it. After all, it is our territories that have been occupied, it is the army that is standing on our borders,” he insisted.
