Princess released after three years in custody

Saudi authorities have released a princess who was jailed without charge for nearly three years in Riyadh, a human rights organization in the Gulf Kingdom announced on Saturday. A 57-year-old businessman and personality known for his outspokenness, Basma Bent Saud launched an appeal to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salman in April 2020 for his release for health reasons. London-based organization ALQST, which specializes in Saudi Arabia, said on Twitter: “Basma Bent Saud and his daughter Sohoud, who have been detained since March 2019, have been released.” The NGO condemned the authorities’ “negligence” in handling the princess’s health condition, saying “no charges were leveled against her at any point during her detention.” Basma Bent Saud was arrested just before he left for Switzerland for treatment, a source close to his family said.
