The study authors also note that the Chinese population, which is estimated at over 1.4 billion today, is expected to decline to about 732 million by the end of the century.
The United States will be in fourth place, followed by Pakistan. In addition, at least five of the ten most populous countries will be from the African continent (Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Egypt and Tanzania).
